Desirée Holman’s use of exaggeration and fantasy leak into an apparently real world setting, where playfully masked characters peer out from heavy disguise and romp about in hermetically confined environments. Desirée Holman skewers our perceptions by distorting the way people appear and presenting the face as an illusion. If our worlds are self-contained stages and our bodies are hollowed constructs, what lies beneath?

Bio:
Desirée Holman's process involves fabricating figurative props, which are manipulated in role-playing games. The work uses games of make-believe to illuminate our behaviors and desires in the ‘real’ world.  Her work has been exhibited internationally at venues such as the Sao Paulo Museum of Modern Art; The Hessel Museum; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts; Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art; Milan’s BnD Studios; Toronto’s YYZ; The Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art; Berkeley Art Museum and Brazil’s Museum of Image and Sound.  In February 2009, her new work will be featured in a group exhibition at the SF MOMA.
